Zum ersten Mal zeigen wir in einer musealen Ausstellung die New Yorker Künstlerin Wendy White (*1971).

Die Amerikanerin hat bereits auf der internationalen Armory Show auf sich aufmerksam gemacht und wurde mit ihrer Installation auf dem Stand von Shulamit Nazarian zu den zehn besten Präsentationen gekürt.

Wendy Whites Arbeiten sind in vielerlei Hinsicht eine permanente Untersuchung und Ausweitung der Möglichkeiten traditioneller Leinwandmalerei. Dies betrifft einmal die Materialien selbst, die sie verwendet, so eigens für die Künstlerin angefertigte Plexiglas-Scheiben und Rahmen aus PVC, Teppiche oder Holz. Zum anderen wählt die Künstlerin Präsentationsformen, die von klassischen Formen abweichen. Sie lehnt ihre Bilder direkt an die Wand und überschreitet damit permanent die Grenzen von Malerei und Skulptur. Auf der aktuellen Armory Show verdeckte sie über Tage ihre Bilder mit Vorhängen und ließ sie erst im Laufe der Messe für das Publikum öffentlich erscheinen. Der Rahmen ist für sie keineswegs auf ein Rechteck beschränkt, sondern greift die Idee der „shape canvas“ aus der amerikanischen Tradition wieder auf. Ihre Werke stehen vielmehr als Objekte im Raum und schaffen so einen unmittelbarer Zugang zu dem Besucher, ähnlich der Rauminstallation oder multimedialen Arrangeme nts.  Vielfach malt sie mit Airbrush wodurch eine Assoziation und Nähe zum gesprühten Graffitis entsteht, aber mit stark erweiterten Möglichkeiten.

Inhaltlich ist die Künstlerin in den aktuellen gesellschaftlichen und politischen Fragestellungen zu Hause. Ihre Themen versteht sie als ein „genau-jetzt-in-dem-kulturellen-Moment“ und somit immer auch als zeitkritischer Beitrag im aktuellen Diskurs. Beispiele für diese Auseinandersetzung mit der Gegenwart sind ihre Beiträge zu den Geschlechterverhältnissen und den unterschiedlichen etablierten Machtpositionen zwischen Mann und Frau.

Ebenso setzt sie sich mit Markenfetischismus auseinander und thematisiert in ihren Werken die Möglichkeiten der Werbung.

Den Arbeiten Wendy Whites ist eigen, dass sie mit einer Kühnheit und Coolness daherkommen und damit überlieferte und klassische ästhetische Formen ignorieren oder mit ihnen spielen. Ihre Arbeiten zeichnen sich durch eine kompromisslose Haltung innerhalb der Gegenwartskunst aus, sie sind in jeder Hinsicht kritisch und in jedem Fall mutige Entscheidungen. Sie selbst beschreibt ihre Arbeiten als „retro und dennoch futuristisch, von Natur aus urban, reaktiv und rebellisch, aber auch bescheiden und mit do-it-yourself-Charakter“.

Soweit es die Coronapandemie es zulässt, wird die Ausstellung von der Künstlerin selbst vor Ort kuratiert. Einige Werke werden vor Ort entstehen, um der Künstlerin alle Möglichkeiten der Aktualität zu lassen.

Die Umsetzung der Ausstellung erfolgt in Kooperation mit der Galerie van Horn, Düsseldorf.

For the first time, we are showing the New York artist Wendy White (*1971) in a museum exhibition.

The American has already attracted attention at the international Armory Show and was chosen as one of the ten best presentations with her installation on the booth of Shulamit Nazarian.

Wendy White’s works are in many ways a permanent exploration and expansion of the possibilities of traditional canvas painting. On the one hand, this concerns the materials she uses, such as Plexiglas panes and frames made especially for the artist from PVC, carpets or wood. On the other hand, the artist chooses forms of presentation that deviate from classical forms. She leans her paintings directly against the wall and thus permanently crosses the boundaries between painting and sculpture. At the current Armory Show, she covered her paintings with curtains for days and only let them appear publicly to the audience in the course of the fair. For her, the frame is by no means limited to a rectangle, but picks up the idea of the „shape canvas“ from the American tradition. Rather, her works stand as objects in space and thus create immediate access to the visitor, similar to spatial installations or multimedia arrangements.  In many cases, she paints with an airbrush, which creates an association and proximity to sprayed graffiti but with greatly expanded possibilities.

In terms of content, the artist is at home in current social and political issues. She understands her themes as an „exactly-now-in-the-cultural-moment“ and thus always as a time-critical contribution in the current discourse. Examples of this engagement with the present are her contributions to gender relations and the different established positions of power between men and women.

She also deals with brand fetishism and addresses the possibilities of advertising in her works.

Wendy White’s works are characterised by a boldness and coolness that ignores or plays with traditional and classical aesthetic forms. Her works are marked by an uncompromising stance within contemporary art, they are critical in every respect and bold decisions in every case. She herself describes her works as „retro and yet futuristic, urban by nature, reactive and rebellious, but also modest and with a do-it-yourself character“.

As far as the corona pandemic allows, the exhibition will be curated on-site by the artist herself. Some works will be created on-site to give the artist every opportunity for up-to-dateness.

A catalogue will be published to accompany the exhibition. The exhibition is being implemented in cooperation with Galerie van Horn, Düsseldorf.
